When we moved in 13 years ago, we put up a large bird box. (North Wales). It sat empty for 12 years. This year lots of owl noises at night and then we started to see an owl coming and going from the box. Its less than 10 metres from the house and visible from the windows. We also have a lot of blackbird pairs with youngsters. They have been going crazy when the owl comes and goes so we know when to look for them. We "think" this is the male that has been in the trees near the box. Today he come and went 3 times in about a 40 minute period. Middle of the day 4-5 pm.
