[TOMT] Contemporary fiction novel about a girl who loses her twin brother and converts to Christianity

What I remember:

The main character is a girl who previously had a twin brother with a similar name to her (think Michael and Michelle) who died shortly before the start of the novel. She is young (like 19 - 21) and has a bad relationship with her mother, so moves to Paris to get away. Ends up on hard times and engages in a lot of drinking and smoking and gets very close to a guy who is a few years older than she is who gets her pregnant. She gets a job at a restaurant (or some sort of service industry job) that requires her to be on her feet all day and almost passes out. Her apartment is very shoddy, particularly during the winter and she is helped by an older co-worker. Ends up meeting an American (I think?) missionary who helps her out and she eventually converts either shortly before or after giving birth to twins. She names one of the twins after her brother.

I know I read this probably about 15 - 20 years ago, but I believe the novel was published in the late 90s or early 2000s. I remember the cover being blue and maybe having a picture of a girl meant to represent the main character looking sadly off in the distance.
