Has YouTube become harder to grow on in the last two years

Feels like growing on YouTube now takes way more effort than it did before. Older creators talk about gaining traction with simple videos, while newer channels seem to need perfect thumbnails, retention, editing, and consistency just to get noticed. For people who’ve been creating for a while, do you genuinely think YouTube growth is harder today or are new creators just expecting results too fast?
