Hi everyone,
I am preparing to apply for PhD programs in Information Science and Systems for the 2027 cycle and would appreciate realistic feedback on how my early academic record might impact my admission chances. My undergraduate history shows a significant turning point: I began my studies at one institution where I struggled with a 2.0 GPA over two years while navigating a difficult international move and the onset of COVID-19. I eventually withdrew from that school, transferred to a different institution, and switched majors, which resulted in a major turnaround where I finished my degree with a 3.4 GPA and received an Outstanding Academic Excellence Award. I have since completed an MS in Business Analytics with a 3.8 GPA and am currently working in an audit role while pursuing two faculty-led and two independent research projects involving AI and data analytics. Given this clear upward trajectory following my transfer and my professional experience, I am curious if admissions committees typically "filter out" applicants based on early grades from a previous institution or if a strong Master's performance and relevant work experience act as a reset; additionally, I would like to know if it is better to address the early 2.0 GPA directly in my Statement of Purpose or keep that explanation for an optional personal history section.
