Under San Francisco's "10B" program, companies can hire uniformed, armed SFPD officers for hourly rates ($135 for a standard officer, nearly $190 for a lieutenant). The officers remain on-duty with full police powers, but private companies foot the bill.

WIRED found that Airbnb spent $428,443 on police protection in 2024, and Salesforce paid nearly $728,000. The program has drawn criticism over potential abuse of sick leave, officers sidestepping main duties for easier overtime shifts, burnout, and geographic disparities in where the gigs occur, but the city calls it "a big win" for visible policing at no taxpayer cost.
