Blurb:

S-Rank Hunters are forced to bestow their class upon F-Rank Hunters.

This is the protocol The Great System has implemented for the humans it summons to its planet. A mechanic designed to kickstart their entry into The Natural Selection: a battle royale fought by those kidnapped from Earth, hosted in the simulated city of Seoul, South Korea.

Gray Kim is one of the unlucky thousands ripped from his home and thrust into the magical world of Arcana. He is granted a class that allows him to manipulate clouds, only to quickly discover just how useless the ability is for him.

He will have to master a power he doesn’t comprehend, survive these death games, and navigate the cutthroat politics of the S-Rank Guilds. But this barely scratches the surface of the struggles that await him. The true threat he will have to face is the S-Rank Hunter from whom he inherited his class—a man determined to end his life.

Authors Notes:

The blurb might come across as a little gimmicky, but I created the hook on purpose to get the initial eyeballs onto the story. The premise of everyone having a mentor has made for a very interesting world, as well as politics. (Only humans from Earth are given the powers of an S-Rank, creating conflict against the natives of the new planet). Utilizing hunters, letter grade rankings, and guilds might make this seem like another Solo Leveling clone. But I'm writing this with the full intention of being something far greater than that. The first chapter will determine if this genre is for you, and it'll give a good scope for the world that I've set up.

Hello, the author of Cloud of Smoke here! At the time of posting, my story is approximately 20 spots away from hitting Rising Stars Main according to the sites. Judging from the analytics and velocity of my peers at the bottom of the RS list, it doesn't seem like my story will make it. So, I have prepared some tips for you aspiring new authors attempting a run for RS, which I think you might find enlightening.

  • The Guides: I highly recommend reading all the sticky threads and guides posted in this subreddit. They will give you a solid base foundation as to what it takes to get there. I've gone through them countless times just to dot all my i's and cross all my t's.
  • Hare Method: There is one big adjustment I would make for the hare method (mass releasing 20k words on day one, and spamming your chapters daily after that). Instead of releasing 20k words on the first day of your launch, I would release 20 chapters. I'd even go so far as to say that 30 chapters are necessary.
  • Advertising: Having a good chunk of chapters to bite into will appease the binge-readers stumbling across your story. This is important because you will be running at least 5 advertisements on your launch. I released 8 chapters on launch (20k words) and activated my ads. Those chapters had the highest view count, but the chapters after that plummeted in views. There were also a ton of people who clicked "Read Later" according to my analytics. Transitioning those early ad clicks into instant readers is what you need, and what the algorithm will pick up on. You must run ads on day one because they run on a slow trickle and it takes 2 months to fully expend all the impressions. Capitalizing on the 30-day "New Story" buff is crucial.
  • Established Author Backing: The 20k-word launch is only effective for established authors releasing a new story. They have the fandom from their old ones, and the connections to arrange shoutouts with other established authors, shooting them to the top of the list. You don't have that luxury. As a new author, you must prove your worth by showing the readers what you're capable of. 10 chapters on launch isn't enough.
  • Shoutouts: Don't be afraid to send a cordial message to EVERYBODY on Rising Stars for a swap. Many of you authors reading this have already been messaged by me 😄 I've gotten a few responses back from authors who generously gave me a chance. The one tip I'd give you is to ask them to insert your code into an older chapter that doesn't have one, in exchange for your newer chapter. Odds are they don't have any available slots in the future, so this works very well. My acceptance rate has been higher when asking for this, and I've found that those older chapters were where the majority of my clicks came from anyway.

Take my advice with a grain of salt as I do not have access to the RoyalRoad algorithm!

Authors Notes:

If you’re looking to dive deep into the world of Manhwa Hunters, this one’s for you. I’ve focused on character personalities, conflict, growth, interactions, and motivations rather than the extensive dungeon exploring or drawn-out mob grinding scenes.
