Davaeorn and SCS - a question about mobility

Sup everyone.

The fight against Davaeorn in BG1 was one of the best in the game, and this was by virtue of his mobility: he used Dimension Door liberally to move around the battlefield, shaking things up and forcing you to adapt your strategy.

I’ve watched a couple videos on YT showing the fight with SCS and it doesn’t look like he’s still moving around at all—he became static like BG2 mages. Is that the case, or did I just stumble across a couple “unfortunate” videos?

New EEEx dropped

Sup y’all.

EEEx v1.0 dropped and it adds a feature that I think is worth mentioning:

This update’s main feature is uncoupling the Infinity Engine's render rate from its update rate – allowing the game to run at refresh rates greater than 30 FPS. Increasing the FPS of the engine greatly improves the smoothness of viewport / cursor movement, especially on high refresh rate monitors.

Even though my preference is to play the classics on my retro PC, so I won’t be benefitting from this anytime soon, I still think this is a kick-ass feature that deserves some visibility.

The new release also fixes some engine bugs, including the weapon speed bug that was previously only fixed for the classics with ToBEx AL.

I figured if you’re on a platform that allows you to mod your game, you might be interested in this.

I tried googling for a list of BG2 bosses that are immune to critical hits, but came up short. I reckon the following are immune:

- Bodhi
- Irenicus
- The 5
- Demogorgon
- Amelyssan

But is this list at all complete?

On a tangentially related note, I can’t but wonder whether the Critical Strike HLA is really worth it. Sure, it guarantees your every attack will land—but by the time you have it, your THAC0 is probably already such that it can never miss (unless you roll a 1).

I wouldn’t waste a Critical Strike on a random trash mob—but if the bosses I’d want to use it on are immune to critical hits, then what’s the point?

I don’t have a BG2 installation handy to check. Does anybody know whether the Enhanced Robe of the Archmagi from the Item Upgrade mod sets colors for the wearer or just inherits the wearer’s colors like the standard Robe of the Archmagi does?

Sup, everyone.

It’s going to be a long time still before my next playthough, but I like to theorycraft and I’m putting together some ideas.

I’d like for my next CHARNAME to be a Berserker who duals to Cleric at level 9. So I guess my first question is, should I just pull an Anomen and dual at 7th level instead?

The plan for this character is to wield Ashideena with a Large Shield in BG, then land on Flail of Ages and Defender of Easthaven in the late game. Ultimately I would like to spend two pips each at character creation for Warhammer and Sling (to have a ranged option), then start focusing on Flails.

If I dual at 9th level, I’ll be a Berserker for the whole of BG1 and I’ll end the game with two pips in Flails. I can dual in BG2 after putting a third pip in Flails, but then I must start investing in other Cleric weapons. Up to Cleric level 9, that’s 4 pips. I can give two to Mace, then two to TWF.

If I’m understanding this correctly, I should then be able to reach about 20th level in Cleric by the end of SoA. That should give me an additional three pips, which means I’ll be able to give two more to Flails (thus reaching GM) and a third pip to TWF. Pips in ToB won’t matter, but I can give them to Slings or Warhammers if I want to wield CF or Runehammer.

Sounds like a good plan?

In terms of party composition, this is what I had in mind:

BG:
B/C
F/T (custom)
F/M (custom)
Imoen (dual)
Jaheira
Khalid

BG2:
B/C
F/T (custom)
F/M (custom)
Jaheira
Edwin
(Rotate)

TOB:
B/C
F/T (custom)
F/M (custom)
Jaheira
Edwin
Sarevok

The idea is that in BG1 Jaheira would be on divine casting duty as well as act as a tank, while a dualled Imoen would act a secondary arcane caster. Edwin might be a better choice here from a power perspective (as well as continuity), but I like having Imoen around. We’ll see.

In BG2, Jaheira would be a tank and a second divine caster, Edwin would be my main arcane caster, and I could complete most characters’ quests with the rotating slot. Will likely go to Spellhold with five characters and keep Imoen thereafter.

Question: what weapons should I give Jaheira throughout the saga?

The F/T is going to use Dagger of Venom in BG, then move on to dualwielding a long sword and the Scarlet Ninja-to for the rest of the saga.

The F/M will do long sword and large shield in BG, switch to dual katanas in BG2, then dual long swords in ToB.
