Hey r/Tourguide ,

Solo traveler here — I kept having the same frustrating experience: you search for "things to do in Paris" and get the same 10 Tripadvisor spots everyone else visits.

What I actually wanted: the campfire on the beach a local knows. The artist who lets you paint in their studio. The runner who shows you the city at 6am before anyone else is up.

So we built LocalMate — an app where locals offer exactly these kinds of experiences as bookable tours. No bus groups, no scripts. Just locals sharing what they actually love about their city.

We just launched on iOS and are looking for our first guides in: Rome, London, Lisbon, Tokyo, Florence, New York, Athens, Hamburg, Barcelona, Paris.

If you're a local in any of these cities and have an experience worth sharing — or know someone who does — I'd love to connect.

Happy to answer any questions. What unusual local experiences have you stumbled onto as a solo traveler?

Not the Colosseum. Not the Vatican. Not cacio e pepe in Trastevere.

I mean the moments that feel like the real Rome — the ones that happen when a local decides to show you something.

The nonna who invited you in. The artist whose studio you stumbled into. The market at 5am before the city wakes up. The rooftop nobody else knows about.

I've been to Rome twice and both times the best moments were completely unplanned — and always involved a local who just decided to share something they loved.

For those who know the city well: what's yours? And how did it happen — pure luck, or did you actively seek it out?

Hey everyone 👋

I’ve been working on a project called LocalMate, and it’s finally live on the iOS App Store 🎉

LocalMate lets you create and share your own local tours — whether it’s hidden gems, food spots, scenic walks, or unique experiences in your city. The idea is simple: help people explore places through real recommendations from locals instead of generic guides.

You can sign up for free as a “Local Guide” and start building your first tour in just a few minutes.

I’d really appreciate if some of you could try it out and share honest feedback — especially what works, what doesn’t, and what features you’d like to see next. I’m actively improving the app and your input would help a lot.

Check it out here: www.local-mate.com

Thanks in advance 🙏
