Chapter 18 excerpt:

Once or twice, Harry’s hand swung close enough that their fingers brushed, but every time he pulled away. Ana let out a deep sigh, the hollow feeling in her chest widening with each near-miss. In her mind, the day kept looping: the way they reminisced about Sirius, the good times they had in the shop, the box in Draco’s hands, Katie suspended mid-air, the look on Harry’s face when she didn’t agree with him. Each memory was carrying its own feeling, and each was tugging at her in a different direction.

She wanted to say something - anything - to stitch their beginning back together to where it had been headed before Katie, before Draco, before all of this pulled them so far apart. She was worried that if she chose to do what was right by her father, by Dumbledore, to keep their secrets, Harry would stop reaching for her. But they weren’t her secrets to tell, her lives to save.

“Harry,” she finally said, grabbing his hand. They stopped dead in their tracks, students pouring all around them, curious eyes throwing stares. She got closer to him so they wouldn’t be overheard. “I need you to know that even if I don’t agree with you, I am on your side. Always.”

Harry glanced sideways at her, surprise softening the harsh features that worry had carved into his face. After a moment, he nodded.

“I know now,” he whispered back.
