I recently moved to a new neighborhood with my two cats and I’m looking for advice on how to handle the transition to letting them outdoors again.

I have:

a 1-year-old female

a 10-year-old male

They were previously mostly outdoor cats, but now we’re in an apartment in an urban area (low traffic, 30 km/h zone). Since the move, they’ve been more restless and frustrated indoors.

So far, I’ve:

introduced them to the area by walking them on a harness and leash

gotten them comfortable with the surroundings gradually

equipped both with GPS trackers

My plan is to start letting them roam freely, but only:

during nighttime at the beginning

mostly on weekends when it’s quieter

My main concern is territorial conflict. There are other cats in the neighborhood, and mine don’t have an established territory here yet, so I expect fights.

Questions:

How can I minimize fights with other cats during this transition?

Are there ways to reduce territorial aggression (timing, scent strategies, gradual exposure, etc.)?

Is it better to release them together or separately at first?

Any practical steps that actually work in real-life situations like this?

I understand some level of conflict is unavoidable, but I want to reduce the risk of injuries as much as possible.

Any experience-based advice is useful.
