Hello, my husband and I are going through a difficult time at the moment and separating has been discussed. We adopted 2 cats in 2021, we were married at the time and still are.

He technically adopted them because he filled the forms in, although he will have cited that he had a wife at the time.

We adopted them from a rescue centre. It required a donation fee of £75 per cat. I have evidence that I sent him half the money with the reference ‘cats.’

They are registered at the vet under my name and always have been. I buy all the food and send him a bill afterwards. They both have insurance and vet plans, which is also in my name.

I sort out all their medication and they actually have my surname at the vets.

My husband is saying that if we split up that he is taking the cats as he believes they are technically his as he signed the adoption papers.

Since we were married at the time and I can prove I sent him half of the payment, and also take responsibility for their food and medical needs, I don’t think that this is correct.

If we do split up then I will be organising to buy the house off him, which is where they have lived since we adopted them.

Can I get some advice on where I stand please?
