Last night I was clearing storage on my phone when I found an old voicemail from my childhood best friend.
He passed away almost four years ago.
I don’t even remember saving it, but hearing his voice again completely stopped me in my tracks. The message itself was stupidly normal too. He was just asking if I wanted to grab food after work and joking about me always being late.
For some reason that made it hit harder.
Not some deep final conversation. Not movie dialogue. Just a normal random Tuesday message from someone who had no idea it would someday become important.
I sat there listening to it three times in a row before finally backing it up somewhere safe.
It’s weird how grief sneaks up on you through tiny things like that.
