Has anyone tried shipping things back home periodically?

I am a big Japanese goods enjoyer and so are people I know. I also did not have a decent job til recently so theres a decent amount of stuff I need replaced or just need in general.

So anyway, I forecast myself buying a lot. I have heard of people using the "checked bag trick" but im not sure I feel like carrying a big suitcase around the whole trip (I want to see if I can get away with just bringing my small suitcase that'll go on the plane and a backpack). I also do not know if what I buy will exceed the bag. I also would have to purchase it as all I have is my small suitcase. There is also the possibility of my luggage being lost.

I also considered the cost of carrying around a big bag like that. I could be wrong but arent they usually not allowed on trains and things? Or cost money to store or transfer? Not to mention the hassle.

Is it a completely horrible idea to ship out goods bought before leaving each city? Has anyone done it before?
