New to Reddit. Co-worker told me about this site. Old person. Work at Target part-time. Extra spending money. Life expensive; and getting more expensive. A few words of (perhaps) wisdom, for those struggling with work in general. For what it's worth (which might not be much), but I've worked for a long time; over four decades. Here goes:

It should be much more fun to work at retail. It is miserable nowadays. Truly. This is probably my 20th job over 40 years. I won't be staying much longer. If you are miserable too, move on.

TARGET CORPORATE: THERE IS STILL MUCH WORK TO DO.

  1. Folks starting out in work: if you are stressed out, and can't cope with this shit; the problem is not you. It is Corporate America. It is work-life in general in the USA. It didn't always used to be like this. People used to laugh, have fun at work, goofed off at times, but got the work done. Somewhere along the way, society, work, and company life somehow got incredibly serious. It sucks now. Truly.
  2. Not all companies are this stringent with metric tracking, expecting you to get tons of shit done, getting pulled in multiple directions, and essentially being set up for failure; in that you will many, many times feel ZERO sense of accomplishment or TEAMWORK, because we are being nitpicked to doing too much with too little. TARGET needs to wake-the-F up and truly see what is going on at the store level. I'm talking, EXECUTIVES at CORPORATE, go work at a store, not in MINNESOTA, but travel to a typical store, and go do fulfillment, drive up; and the truly INCREASINGLY SHITTY JOBS, that are time-bound, insane metrics bound. Work that job for a few weeks, and see how you feel. Is it acceptable, that in many stores, after a year or so, maybe 5% to 10% of the TMs will be still WORKING THERE? Is that acceptable.
  3. Young folks, the issue is not you, and I would recommend NOT to put up with MOST of the BULLSHIT. Do what is asked. Do NOT let "LEADERS" talk to you like SHIT, push you to do extra work, BUG you over and over again on the same SHIT, especially if you are doing MOST of the work. I see this all the time. TLs in particular, talking to younger TMs like PIECES OF SHIT. Infuriates me. Watch how that same problem TL talks to older workers, at the store. DO THEY BARK THE SAME ORDERS? No. They know they can't get away with that SHIT. Period. This part infuriates me, if you can't already tell. To TLs that do this SHIT, you are NOT leaders. You think you are building leadership skills. NO. You are setting yourselves up for career failure.
  4. This Old Person survives at Target by doing what is asked, keeping busy, and when asked to do EXTRA SHIT, I make the TL prioritize the work. THAT IS THEIR JOB. I have had TLs essentially say, "get all the tasks done"; and I say, "that's impossible, you know that, so tell me the most important ones to prioritize".

Enough of the Old Person Crap. Peace be with All.
