TTL-Based Varityper 560 System with Original Chassis – Restoring & Documenting
Recently recovered what appears to be a fairly complete Varityper 560 phototypesetting system from the late 1970s / early 1980s.
The setup includes:
• Original card cage / chassis
• CPU boards with DM74181 ALUs
• Bipolar RAM boards (N82S09)
• Character generator boards
• Disk controller logic
• DRAM / SRAM memory boards
• Ribbon cable interfaces and original backplane
The architecture is especially interesting because it’s built almost entirely from discrete TTL logic and microcode PROMs rather than a modern microprocessor design.
I’m currently cleaning and documenting the system and trying to preserve as much information as possible about the hardware.
Some highlights:
• Bit-slice style CPU design
• Bipolar RAM technology
• Industrial phototypesetting hardware
• Original Varityper optics/chassis components
• Late-70s TTL engineering
Would love to hear from anyone who has experience with Varityper systems, phototypesetting equipment, or similar TTL-era machines.
I may eventually let the complete setup go to a serious collector/restorer, so feel free to message me if you’re genuinely interested in the project.
