I recently got some Organic Ethiopia Suke Quto from Caffeine Control based in Australia. u/Caffeine_Moderator was very kind to send me a bag to the US as I was looking for a good Ethiopian light roast decaf. I highly recommend giving it a try if you're in that part of the world (or willing to pay international shipping) and like a bright well rounded, slightly fruity cup.

I was primarily after Blueberry notes and though this doesn't quite have blueberry I did pick up on the blackberry and found it a delightful cup still.

I also recently picked up a bag of Decaf Ethiopia from Blossom roasters who are stateside. Caffeine Control said they get the same or at least similar green beans and likely just have slightly different roasts. Blossom's had a little more blueberry shine through but I found their beans very finnicky to get the bright flavor from and hard to dial in, but worth the effort. I definitely recommend trying them out if you're in the US and want some bright floral light roast Ethiopian decaf.

They're both the best decaf coffee I have found so far!

For those interested in how I've been dialing them in I've found a few peculiarities, with the Blossom I noticed the more fruity flavors started disappearing within a week of getting the bag in and it had just been roasted so I recommend vacuum sealing and freezing in small 2-3 day size portions if that's an option for you. I've also found I needed to grind them much smaller than other beans I've had, I've found the most success with my aeropress and have gone on my Capresso Infinity almost all the way to where I go for espresso. I settled at the fine end of fine with the aeropress though.

I don't have a great pourover setup so I have found the most success using Hoffman's Aeropress recipe at:

  • 11g of grounds
  • 200g of water
  • 199**°F - 205°**F
  • Add all the water at once, let sit for 2 min, then swirl to disrupt the grounds at the top, wait 30 seconds, then push the plunger. I do have a flow control cap.
  • I like adding a little extra water at the end even though it's already a lot of water to coffee, but just a little splash I feel helps bring out the delicate flavors

I still have a few more recommendations on my post from a couple weeks ago to work through but if anyone out there has more fruity, bright decafs with blueberry notes I'd love to know about them!

Happy Brewing!
