Nora’s Nursery lost their absorbency 2 years in. Can we save them, should we switch brands, or should we rebuy?

Hi all!

We have successfully exclusively used Nora’s Nursery pocket diapers for two years, but they have recently completely lost their absorbency. To be fair, about 1 year ago we moved from a place with soft water to a place with hard water and continued to just wash with an approved detergent (no water softener). Leaks have been common throughout our usage, but he leaks through every single diaper right now. We stripped the diapers for the first time in February but it doesn’t seem to have helped much (although we still haven’t charged our washing method).

My question is: are these diapers just at the end of their life or have I completely ruined them by not using water softener? Is there any saving them if I start using water softener in regular cycles? I am pregnant and having our second baby in July so I am debating completely starting over with either a new set from NN or switching to another brand if there are strong opinions about NN’s absorbency. Are there better options if I have to rebuy anyway?

I have been interviewing for a remote job since February and I am due at the end of July. The application process has taken a long time on their end (not mine) and I anticipate they may be making an offer in the next few weeks around mid-late May. I would have two-ish months before I would need to be out on maternity leave. Has anyone else been in this position before? When did you share that you were pregnant and what was your experience? I am afraid of sharing too early and they retract their offer using a bogus reason to cover themselves, but also hate to blindside them. For context, this would be for an academic hospital, not a CRO.
