5 months ago, I decided to delete my Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, and whatever other platforms I had an account on. Keep in mind, I'm a Sophomore in college, and have had these accounts for 5+ years. Initially, it was tough knowing that I wouldn't be able to keep in touch with my friends or follow the latest trends. As the months passed, however, I realized just how addicting and controlling social media can be. I am at an age where saying that I don't have any social media is met with utter confusion and curiosity - but I am also in a position where I can see just how addicted people are to Snapchatting and making sure they've curated the best Instagram picture to get hundreds of likes. My roommate is CONSTANTLY on his phone Snapping away or CONSTANTLY refreshes his Instagram feed to see how many likes he's gotten on his latest post. There have been multiple occasions where he simply ignores what I tell him as he stares at his phone, it drives me insane. As for me, I am not on my phone much nowadays, and actually call my friends or message them if I want to talk - instead of sending pointless six second selfies. Deleting social media has helped me get closer with my friends and weed out the ones who never were my friends but simply were followers/Facebook friends. Deleting social media is probably the best decision I've made in my 19 years on Earth, and I probably won't ever look back. (I'm only going to keep Reddit, lol)
