Piano learning roadmap

I’m in my early 20s and enrolled in piano classes about 6 months ago (1 session/week). So far, I’ve been learning mostly sheet music (theory) along with a few beginner songs.

My instructor recently suggested that I enroll for Trinity grade exams since I mentioned I want piano to be a long-term hobby.

I’m a bit confused and would love some advice:

Is it worth taking Trinity grade exams if I’m learning just as a hobby?

Is focusing heavily on sheet music the right approach for a beginner?

I’ve heard that many artists aren’t very strong in sheet musicso is it really necessary?

Would appreciate honest opinions, especially from people who’ve taken Trinity exams or learned piano long-term
