I was in us, as working in a non layoff government body kind of a research lab.
Manager was an Indian narcissistic guy, put me on pip, though I was performing good. In us I was not lowering my voice or taking the blame in 1 to 1 for his stupidities and putting blame on me , also he had an issue with my system engineer who was also Indian , who could not migrate the system because of their old infrastructure bottle neck , which this guy is not ready to listen.
So,
I resigned 2 week before the pip, talked with director and said if I serve the notice period that guy will terminate me citing pip , and I don’t want that to happen , I need to go today itself. That white lady understood and allowed me to go that day itself.
In us background check has rules , you can’t defame a person and can’t share internal notes:

Ready to rehire ( most hr avoid this as they fear law suit, this is NO for any criminal/a big offence)
Not even salary, and only with the consent of the employee.
They ask for references previous manager in bgv form where they had option ‘not to contact’ (max 2). They won't contact hr/manager but you can submit salary slips as proofs.
You can give your skip, if not bgv agency contact back to your hr and most cases he ask you to give contact of any colleague.
India should have laws for anti defamation during bgv like in us and Europe. Companies are exploiting us.
