Secret of the Wings and Wings of Starlight small rant
Recently been revisiting my old interest in the Tinkerbell movies within the pages of the new Queen Clarion book. While I’m loving it, I do have a tiny bit of something that’s bothering me and has bothered me for awhile. Since this book is for teens, I feel like expecting a little bit more realistic lore is fair.
I know this is a fantasy make believe story originally invented for children so it doesn’t have to be realistic and all that but they’re the ones that went the romance route so…
This is what is bothering me: Fairies don’t reproduce. They’re born from a baby’s laughter. This would mean that realistically, with no need for them to reproduce, fairies would be asexual.
They could explain this away for Milori and Clarion by saying governing talent fairies DO in fact reproduce. And they could do it without being explicit. Like “governing talent fairies, unlike most fairies in pixie hollow, are not born of a humans laugh. Perhaps once long ago their predecessors were. But how governing talents come to be are not spoken of outside of their circle. Writing talent fairies believe this is because their talent is more concerned with the fairy world than the human one: therefore they cannot rely on humans for their existence.”
Instead I’m left through the whole book wondering why on earth two realistically asexual people are feeling romantic attraction towards one another.
I know I can’t be the only one wondering this…and I know I’m overthinking it because it’s a kids story originally and though this is for an older audience it’s still relying on a childish world. But I just wondered if I’m alone in my confusion 😂
