Homeless in 2 days, what resources are there?

I'm an NYU student who had to take an emergency medical leave, I was not aware they give you only 48 hours to move out of student housing. I have nowhere to go, my family is very violent and it's unlikely they'll allow me to stay with them anyway. I would like to stay near the city because my insurance is here and I need to go to the doctor somewhat regularly.
I have a small amount of savings but not nearly enough to cover a rental/airbnb for the entire summer, I doubt I'll be able to work. I'm totally lost, I don't really understand how the shelter system works here but from what I've seen that might be my only option. Does anyone know of any alternatives/cheap places to stay ($500 a month max)? I know it's out there but I just want to make sure I've exhausted all other options before entering the shelter.
