We all know the two buttons: if more than 50% press blue, everyone survives. If more than 50% press red, everyone who pressed blue dies.
There is no contradiction except in people's heads. The blue button is mentioned first in a positive light. Then the red one is mentioned and framed negatively.
If you flip the scenario on its head, the paradox dissolves:
Everyone who presses red will survive.
Everyone who pressed blue will be killed, except if that's more than 50% of people.
It's the exact same thing, just framed differently. But no one wants to press blue if you put it this way.
Further thoughts: framing seems to be very powerful. Where else can problems be (dis)solved by different framing? Where are we manipulated by external framing?
