I finished steins;gate yesterday night and i have a question about the ending

When future okabe went back in time to fake kurisu’s death, making past okabe think she’s dead, wouldn’t he just send the first dmail again and shift to alpha timeline? How would he know she’s not actually dead? How did the jump to steins;gate timeline happen? This is so confusing to me
