I don't want to say too much about the case as I don't want it to incriminate me, but essentially I've been charged with sexual assault. I'm located in Southern Ontario.

I've spoken to a lawyer and the costs are overwhelming. I'm a student currently pursuing a post secondary education. Is legal aid a bad option in these situations, or is it okay if I find someone who specializes in these types of matters? Has anyone been through something similar and can speak to whether legal aid lawyers are actually effective for sexual assault cases in Ontario? Any advice appreciated.
