Like it says in the title; I had plenty of fun playing as democratic Ukraine and was able to finish the civil war in good time before getting to the bottom of the focus tree, but when it came time to hold off the German invasion they just instantly melted my troops and capped me before I was able to get the insurgency all the way up. Are there any tricks to setting up a good defense?

P.S I only have DLC through Man the Guns so I can't use tank/plane designer or espionage if those become relevant.
