After joining this sub, I honestly feel there is too much unnecessary hype around VW cars. People still talk like it’s the same old “solid German engineering” brand.

So I did some proper research on Volkswagen over the last 4–5 years… and the reality is quite different.

(I’ve added all source links in the comments since links are not allowed in post.)

1. Software is a complete mess

Modern cars are all about software now, and VW is clearly struggling here.

Infotainment hanging, lagging, restarting

Driver assist features glitching

Updates getting delayed or breaking things

Some of their EVs were literally launched with unfinished software.

2. EV battery issues & fire risks

Large-scale recalls due to battery problems

Fire risk concerns in some models

This is not a small issue this is basic safety.

3. Airbags not deploying properly

Hundreds of thousands of cars recalled

This is serious. Not some minor defect proper safety failure.

4. Basic features failing (camera, electronics)

Rearview camera not working properly

Electrical failures across models

In modern cars, these are critical systems.

5. Fire risks even in normal petrol/diesel cars

So it’s not just EV transition ,even ICE cars have issues.

6. DSG gearbox issues STILL not solved

After so many years:

Jerky low-speed driving

Gear hesitation

This has been a known VW problem forever.

7. Electrical issues everywhere

Common complaints:

Random warning lights

Sensor failures

Battery drain

Modern VW = more electronics = more problems.

8. Build quality not like before

Interior rattles

Cheaper materials

Inconsistent quality

Old VW and current VW feel very different.

9. Service experience also not great

Long waiting time for parts

Software fixes taking months

Service centres struggling to diagnose issues

My honest opinion:

VW used to be a great brand. No doubt. But now it feels like:

They couldn’t keep up with software-heavy cars

EV transition is rushed

Same issues repeating across years, and there are lot better brands available currently, even Tata doesn’t have this many recalls, airbags and software issues.
