Hello all!

I’ve been accepted to both UofA Law and TRU Law, and am leaning towards UofA, but I wanted to hear from current 2L students (or 3L students in regards to articling) on how you find the summering process is when it comes to Vancouver firms.

I’ve grown up in Vancouver, and with all my friends and family being here, I want to keep my options open for coming back to the West Coast for summer positions. Yes, I know it can all depend on grades, extracurriculars, and how well you interview, but for the average student with ties to Vancouver, what are the odds/how hard would it be to land a position?

I’ve looked at the public postings for summer students at around 20 moderate to big sized firms in Vancouver, and so far, it seems that UofA students land a position at maybe 8 of these firms, and even then, only 1-2 students per firm, compared to 3-4 TRU students, and of course even more UVic and UBC students. Compare that with the total UofA 1L class size, those stats are looking preeeetty daunting.

Sooo, even though a lot can happen in 3 years of law school and I might not still feel the same about the West Coast, if I really wanted to work in Vancouver sooner rather than later in my career, do you think that UofA would still be the “better” option?

Also, any advice for 1L is welcome and appreciated!! TIA!
