I started Accutane in February. My starting dose was 40mg once a day. I took this dose for two months with no side effects other than dry mouth and dry mucous membranes. By month 3, my dose was upped to 40mg twice a day. After 3 weeks of this dosage, I started to experience laryngospasms and vocal cord paradoxical movements with normal breathing. I would awake from a dead sleep gasping for air, unable to pass air, which emitted a loud stridor sound as I struggled to breathe. The episodes lasted up to 1 minute of not being able to breathe and created so much panic. I was sure I’d pass out and die. This went on for 1 month straight to this day; approximately 2 per week. Most episodes occurred at night about 2hrs after falling asleep. Recently they have started to occur while awake but these episodes are mild and over really quickly. All episodes start off after a cough. My Durm doctor and PCP keep telling me there’s no link between the symptoms and Accutane. I saw ENT specialist today this diagnosis was confirmed after a camera was put down my nose to visualize my vocal cords (paradoxical movement of my vocal cords with normal breathing). I was started on omeprazole 20 mg BID for acid reflux (possibly responsible for the night, laryngospasms) and have to see a speech language pathologist for laryngeal retraining therapy (breathing exercises). It is unsure at this time whether this will go away, but I was told that it could possibly with this plan of action. I feel very strongly that the onset aligns with the increase in my Accutane dose of 80mg/day. Had I known the Accutane would cause these kind of issues I would have never took this route. Not worth it. Has anyone else experienced this?
