Hi all, hoping for some local advice. Used AI to frame the question.
We know early May isn’t ideal for snow, but due to time constraints and being first‑time snow‑seekers, we’re hoping to see any proper snow if possible.
We’ll be in Hokkaido during Golden Week, based in Sapporo, with a rental car May 3–5.
Live cams make Niseko look quite melted, so we’re considering Mt Asahidake instead.
Possible plan:
May 4: Lake Toya → Niseko gondola (morning), then OK to drive to Asahikawa in the evening/night
May 5: Early start → Asahidake Ropeway, maybe Blue Pond, then return to Sapporo
We’re fine with early starts and long days, but not unsafe driving.
Questions:
In early May, is Asahidake clearly better than Niseko for real snow?
Are Google Maps driving times realistic during Golden Week, or should we expect much worse?
Any quick go / no‑go weather tips for Asahidake?
Thanks a lot — appreciate any input 🙏
