This last session my players decided to help a detective investigate a case. This case surrounds a blood cult who are actually TWIST vampires. Im not too worried about the side characters or my players pulling on threads as Ive played many detective games and the last session they investigated the last known location of a missing person. A murder had taken place and they put together the clues to find their next lead.
This was all fine and dandy but I realized shortly into the investigation that i was just hoarding fear and my players were hoarding hope. I personally like to have around 8 fear to 4 so I have enough for fun combat but not too much that my players think I am holding back.
I have some trouble with using fear in Social encounters so id appreciate advice anyone has in that regard but typically Social encounters only have a couple rolls while my characters are rolling for investigation and strength every 5 minutes to interact with a crime scene.
My main question is how to use fear in exploration/Investigation without it always being summoning a monster or enemy?
