im growing out my hair and the sides

idk if i should give up on the sides and trim them + a low taper fade and focus on the middle part where the curls are better

i found that it sometimes turn into an afro like pic 2 which i dont like at all

& i always use leave in when styling in the morning
so should i give the sides a chance to curl more or have a cleaner look?
