Im generally already pretty paranoid about my identity being stolen, but about an hour ago, Wells Fargo called me.

I double checked and it was one of the customer service phone numbers, but ive never had a bank call me before, they've only ever texted me.

I dont use Wells Fargo, I only use Capital One, so maybe im being paranoid and assuming things, but the lady I spoke to was incredibly upset when I said I was outside for privacy.

She also asked if I had lost my id, made any online purchases, or had any facebook/twitter accounts hacked. The only one I said yes to was the purchases bit, but only with stores I have before. I only pay through my cash app on google pay, though.

Im really worried because she said illegal material was purchased under my name, but she hung up about 13 minutes into the call.

Am I being dramatic about this being a scam? Or do you think she just didnt get far enough?

I put concern as the flair, but this is also a question.

Would Wells Fargo call a "customer" about suspicious or illegal purchases?

For a bit of context, I am 19, I have no credit cards, and my bank is Capital One. I just got a call from Wells Fargo's customer support line. Apparently, an illegal purchase was attempted with a card under my name today (5/5/26, documenting just in case). I can't quite remember the lady I spoke to's name (Marie or Mary, I know it started with an M), but she knew my name as well as my address.

I have not signed up for Wells Fargo, and I have not received any mail from them as far as I can remember, but the lady I spoke to said that a credit card was sent to me on April 18th. I told her that I don't have any credit cards period, and have never used Wells Fargo.

They didn't ask for any personal information, but she did also get incredibly upset when I told her that I was outside for privacy. She also asked if I had lost or photocopied an id or passport, if I had received any calls, had Facebook or Twitter, or if I had made any online purchases within the past few months. She said that I could just answer yes or no, but also that I could explain more if I wanted to.

The call started at about 7, and lasted just over 13 minutes. She tried to have me write something down, but I believe she hung up on me because I was in my notes app.

Does anyone know if this was potentially a scam with a spoofed number? Or does Wells Fargo call people in the case of suspicious charges. I know that Capital One sends a text out, but I have no experience with Wells Fargo.

I know that most if not all SSNs in the US were leaked, and since finding that out, I have been paranoid about identity theft happening to me or my family.
