How to install lintel below original brick arch?

I removed drywall from the rear wall of my 1890s brick house. Above the windows is an original brick arch acting as the header/lintel above the window opening.

The mortar is in pretty bad shape and I dont think it's providing much support anymore given the step cracking on the exterior.

What's the proper retrofit/repair? A few contractors said to install steel c channel lintels, but i dont see how that's any better than a steel angle mortared into the brick wall then built up until it's touching the bottom side of the arch

Any thoughts / advice?
