Hey guys,

This Saturday I’m going to the studio with my band to record drums for 3 tracks, it’s a really cool place with many instrument options (they have several kits, snares and cymbals).

We’d like to make the most out of it as this is a considerable investment for us and even though ‘everything sounds good’ with all that equipment, I’ve read many times that the difference a well chosen and well tuned kit makes is huge and what separates a pro mix from an amateur one.

We’d love to read some tips on how you guys approach this as this is a self-produced project and we have to make these decisions ourselves.

I always struggle to chose kits and snares, I tend to go with whatever is there, and unless something sounds really off, I work with it. How do you guys know what type of snare fits *best*? (Applicable to the rest of the kit and cymbals) And how do you tune the kit?

We’re recording 3 tracks, should we re-arrange the kit / re-tune it for each one if they’re in different keys?

I’ll happily read your take. Thank you!!
