Wife goes on walks a lot, but is uncomfortable carrying a weapon. We're going on a trip where we are buying bear spray. Can she carry bear spray for self defense?

We're from Indiana. Google says its a bad idea because its illegal, but, but it's also illegal to shoot someone until its ruled as self defense.

She's a small woman who goes on walks to clear her head. It's a nice-ish town, so we don't expect anything bad to happen, but expectations and reality often differ. Things have actually gotten worse in town over the years, and I simply can't go on all the walks she goes on. Several gun crimes have happened over the last few years. Mostly robberies, but one murder at a factory.

It makes me uncomfortable when she's on these walks alone, especially close to night time, but I'm not going to tell her not to do something. I've told her my feelings about it, check in when she's gone longer than I expect if its getting late at night, but I'm not going to control how she lives her life, you know?

I would feel much better if she had something to defend herself, and it just so happens we will soon have bear spray. If we don't use this bear spray on our trip (I hope we don't have to lol) could she carry it around while on her walks in the horrible chance that she's attacked, or would we be better off spending more money on pepper spray as well after the trip? The bear spray seems like a 1-off purchase unless it can be used in self-defense.
