Yesterday I was biking east on 42nd, turning left onto 6th. I crossed with the pedestrian Walk across 6th so I wouldn’t have to cut across moving traffic; the car signal was still red.

My understanding is that when you’re on a bike and crossing an intersection, you’re supposed to follow the pedestrian signals...

But an NYPD officer standing on 6th north of 42nd saw me moving while the car light was red, stopped me, and wrote me a traffic red‑light ticket, brusque, no interest in hearing that I had the Walk and thought I was doing the legally correct, safer thing.

So: am I misunderstanding the law here? And what do you think prompted him to be interested to a dude on a citibike? I find it interesting because while he was writing me a ticket I've seen a dozen of different infractions- people crossing with the red light, cars turning without blinkers etc and yet he seemed to be interested in bikes only...
