I am a young adult of whom has recently gotten back to reading. When I was younger, I read the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Now, to follow it up, I read the Chronicles of Narnia. However, as a military history hobbyist, one thought dawned on me: Did vets during the Global War on Terror read these novels series to cope with boredom and/or stress? If so, what further novel/novel series did they also read? It does not have to be LoTR or Narnia, but also something like Harry Potter and Percy Jackson; two of which were big back in the 2000s.

Furthermore, how I came to formulate this question was when I watched a YouTube video called "US marines at airport and preparations in desert." In this video, a US Marine could be seen reading the Lord of the Rings on top of a military vehicle.

Edit: Thank you so much for the responses! Please keep in mind that I am a Filipino-Canadian civilian from Canada. As such, I do not possess records ever serving in the military. The reason why I posted this discussion post is to enrich my understanding of recent military history. With all that being stated, peace and love from Canada!
