Do I really a strobe or is it overkill for my needs?

Do I really a strobe or is it overkill for my needs?

Hi all! I recently picked up an AD200 pro II thinking I absolutely needed it to add with my V1 Pro. I have ambitions to do some paid work but haven’t made it that far yet, and honestly don’t know if I will as im not very good with people. I’m mostly just doing portrait sessions with my children and occasionally some sessions with our friend’s kids as well.

Today I tested out the AD200 and used my V1 as a fill/background light. I ended up testing some different setups out and ultimately realized that my speedlight seemed to be more than enough for just personal indoor use. The photo attached is from our Easter shoot using just a speedlight, softbox, and a 5 in 1 reflector. So now I’m thinking about either returning the AD200 OR selling the V1. I like the power of the strobe and the options I have with it, but I like the versatility of the speedlight and am starting to think that I may have gotten a little GAS.. what would you do?

And before anyone comes at me about it being a waste of time.. sure maybe it is, but I like the way it feels, damnit.

Hi all. Posted in r/Nikon but figured I’d give it a god here to since that was removed? Anyways, got some less than exciting news today at work that I’ll be taking a pretty big pay cut and working less hours so I’m going to take this opportunity to spend more time with my family and start trying to do some portrait work locally. My current kit is a..

Z6ii w/ a 50mm 1.8S and the 105mm 2.8S and a Godox V1 with some mods to go with it. I also have the 40/2.

I’d like to add a zoom to tie it all together and give me a little more flexibility, especially when out and about with my kids. I’ve researched a few options but am not sure which route to take..

24-120 f/4 - don’t really need the low light when I have the 50, 105, and flash. It’s the cheaper of the options and I’ve never heard anything bad about it. I’ve also thought about trading my 105 for it and using the extra money for the ad200 or ad300 since I don’t actually do any dedicated macro work anymore and it would lighten my load.

24-70 f/2.8 - the first version, the second is outside my price range. Not the biggest fan of the focal range, like more on the long end normally. I had the f/4 version and didn’t really like it too much though the IQ was good. But I understand how much everyone uses this for portraits and weddings and so on, so for my use case I’ve been considering it.

Tamron 35-150 f/2-2.8- more expensive by a good margin than the 24-120 so I wouldn’t be able to add any lighting. I would trade the 105 for this likely. But man, with that focal range and that aperture it might never leave the camera.

Final option is to trade my Z6ii, 105, and 40mm and get the 24-120 and either a Z7ii for the extra resolution, or a Z5ii for the updated AF. I don’t really have any issues overall with my Z6ii so I don’t NEED to upgrade, but also have considered it.

So what do you all think?
