20 MOA elevation rings are too much - what are my options?

Next weekend I am shooting PRS 1,000 yards using my very accurate 308 rifle, suppressor and handloads. The rifle has a 20 MOA cantilever scope mount , Leupold Mk-4HD 6-24x which has been great for firing subsonic ammo.

Yesterday I take rifle to the range to sight in with match ammo - I don't have enough drop. 12" high and won't go lower at 100yds. Yikes!! That makes 9" high at 300yds.

My short term solution to get through next weeks is sight in with standard rings, tomorrow.

What are my long term options? I would really like to keep firing subsonic ammo at great distances - have a place just 4 miles away that gives me 600-1200 yds depending on what the river is doing. (NO, not competing at 1,000 yds with subs!!!)

  1. Not many 34mm 10 moa ring sets or bases on the market. 34mm rings for some reason seem to come in 20 moa or 0 moa. Only 10 moa I found was Mile High - and their cost is a mile high, $500+. That is not me - not for an annual match.
  2. Shim? Always avoided that. Sounds iffy.
  3. Other?

Yah, Yah, just loosen up the ring screws, turn the scope upside down and use it for 'hold under'. That's the ticket, right?

Edit - thank you to everyone who nailed it about zero stop! Especially for the quick responses. Had I not installed that 20 MOA base, I would have not known of this feature. My other Leupold's do not have this.

When I searched this issue here, I had no useful hits. I am going to leave my noob question here so others can learn!!!

Looking for 2008 TVSF State Fair T-Shirt "Pirates of the Carrots and Beans" in 2xl or 1xl

Family member won the contest to name the state fair theme submitting "Pirates of the Carrots and Beans" in 2008. She had just 1 shirt to remember it by. It's her favorite. And quite thread bare after 18 years. I'd like to replace it for her. I know some folks have a collection of these. If you have one of these 2008 shirts in 2xl or 1xl and willing to part with it - I'd like to make it worth your while. Lets start a chat!

I read the subreddit rules - kinda shocked no Kestrel info popped out. If it is there - it isn't obvious.

I spent decades and decades doing and running NRA Highpower Rifle competition (200/300/600yds with M1a and Mouse Gun (AR-15) in 'as issued condition') Earned a slot on my services national shooting team back in the 90's. Love doing long shots at varmints. My longest deer was 630yds.

There is a group doing PRS 1000yd shooting some distance away. I would love to get involved - better yet - start a group in my area (Fairbanks, Alaska) I took a 5 hour PRS introductory course and learned about the Kestrel. I am 70+ and have always judged windage by what my face felt and the leaves and grass were doing downrange. I will probably only fire 1 or 2 matches per years unless I can get the ball rolling in my area.

The question: Do I really need a Kestrel? The 5hr intro class folks seemed to leave the impression you would not competitive without one that connects to your smart phone - both doing all the math for you. Am I truly at a disadvantage not having Kestrel?

I seem to be able to mentally calculate drop and windage the past 59 years - sure, there have been failures on paper targets. But I always made the important shots on game animals (the idea of having to track a wounded animal for many miles hauling it out on my back is real motivator to make a 1 shot clean kill. (started competition shooting at 11 back in 1966)

I own two chronographs - Magnetospeed and LabRadar - so my velocity is on target to compute bullet drop.

I'm really skeptical. The firing line is usually covered. Berms left and right. Just how accurate is wind where I am sitting relevant to what is happening down range?

If I really should have one - which model?
