I'm not asking about the much talked-about fees or percentages, just about how, exactly, promotions work.

I promote all my listings, and in about 25% of them I get dinged for the promo fee.

What determines if I get charged? I know it's dependent on how the buyer found my listing, but how many ways are there for them to find it?

I assume shoppers search within ebay using key terms related to what they are looking for. What I don't get is how, apparently, sometimes their search lands them in promotion-ville, and other times not.

I see the term "organic" purchases bandied about. What makes a view organic vs. promoted?
