Legend
It is said ashwatthama maddened by rage after the fall of duryodhana, tried to ambush the enemy camp in their sleep. However, the pandava camp was guarded by a fiery entity under the request of krishna
Defeat
Ashwatthama charged against the enemy, unleashing all of his wrath, knowledge and weapons, including brahmashirastra, but all were neutralized by the mysterious entity with ease
Shiva
Realizing it could be none but shiva before him, ashwatthama sat on a firepit and meditated upon the deity, which pleased shiva, who gave way to the enraged hero and entered his body directly
Night Assault
Having inhabited shiva within him, ashwatthama became an avatar of destruction and wrought hell on the enemy camp single-handedly and slew the five sons of pandavas, mistaking them for their fathers, who prior to the assault were evacuated to the kaurava camp by krishna
