Howdy! Not a bassist and definitely not a recording engineer. But I’ve spent my entire life around bass guitars. Literally.
At some point in these coming days, my dad (bass player) will sell me this big ol Ampeg 4x10 + 2x15 cab he’s had for I don’t even know how long. I want to record this thing but oddly enough, I’ve only ever seen dad record DI. If he’s recorded a mic’d cab, I wasn’t there to see it. Thus, I have absolutely no idea what the best practices are for recording bass cabs.
A buddy (half joking) suggested I look at what mics Neural DSP used for Parallax so I did. I‘m decently confident I found the six mics they used and I’m currently looking more into each mic:
- Shure SM57 (I think?)
- Sennheiser e 906
- Sennheiser 421
- Neumann KM 184
- Beyerdynamic M 160
- Royer R121
Since this Ampeg cab has the 2x15 on the bottom, I want to use those as the primary low end/sub sound and blend in what I get from the 4x10 in a kind of Dug Pinnick meets Nolly way. I intend to have my main bass be a Dingwall NG3. God willing (🙏), I’ll get a Tech 21 Dug Ultrabass head to power this whole thing. I think this combination would be MONSTROUS.
But since I’m proactive, I’m thinking ahead. What resources and mics would y‘all recommend for this? I looked through YouTube and either I’m not clicking on the good vids or they’re not popping up cause the ones I found were ok at best.
