VIII Zoom better or worse?

I'm trying to work out whether the VIII's Zoom is better, worse, or the same as previous models like the VI.

My VI: has a sensor and 70-140mm variable optical zoom.

The VIII: has a sensor 4x the size (2x larger in each dimension) and 70mm fixed optical zoom.

My impression on what this means:

  • At 70mm, the VIII's optics are better than the VI's, but the sensor is 4x the size which should improve noise. Both sensors pixel-bin to improve performance. *Overall better.*
  • At 140mm, the VIII is forced to crop-in its 70mm camera package; reducing performance. Prior to cropping, the sensor has pixel-binning *and* an overall bigger size to improve noise performance. Post cropping, with edge pixels cropped out, the VIII's sensor doesn't have pixels to bin for improved performance, but its pixels are 2x the size; so the difference cancels out. *Overall equal performance.*

Which would mean the VIII's zoom package is better at 70mm and equal at 140mm.

Is this about right?
