I want to be the guy with the laptop but dont know where to start
Ive worked as an infrastructure cabling technician through my local union doing commercial construction/low voltage work for about 1.5 years now. Most of my experience is physical infrastructure like pulling cable, terminating, testing, building racks, reading prints, troubleshooting connections, etc.
I’ve recently been wanting to transition into networking/IT, but I want to be honest with myself and others. I’m still very green when it comes to actual networking knowledge and IT experience. I’m studying on my own via JITL (currently on day 5) to obtain the CCNA and am trying to learn as much as possible, but sometimes it feels hard knowing where I realistically fit in.
I guess I’m looking for advice from people already in the field. What skills from infrastructure cabling actually transfer over into networking or entry-level IT roles?
Ive got lots to learn, but I’m hoping my background at least gives me a decent foundation in troubleshooting, working with racks/switches, documentation, and hands-on problem solving.
Has anyone here made a similar jump from construction/trades into IT or networking? And if so, what else helped you break in?
