Harold is a death-obsessed 19-year-old boy from a wealthy family who spends his free time staging elaborate fake suicides to get his mother's attention. He also enjoys attending funerals of strangers. It’s at one of these funerals that he meets Maude, a 79-year-old woman with a zest for life that borders on the chaotic. Maude lives life to the fullest—stealing cars, rescuing trees, and ignoring social norms. As an unlikely romance blossoms, Maude shows Harold that life is not a tragedy to be escaped, but a song to be sung.

A Counter-Culture Classic: Released in 1971, the film captures the anti-establishment spirit of the era. It’s a bold middle finger to traditional bourgeois values and the fear of mortality.

Visual Wit: The film’s dark humor is delivered with a deadpan style. The contrast between Harold’s grim obsession and Maude’s colorful, eccentric world creates a unique visual and emotional texture.

Life Affirming: Despite its morbid premise, Harold and Maude is profoundly life-affirming. It’s a movie that asks you to "go out and start living," making it a favorite for those who feel like outsiders in a conventional world.
