I want to put a small shelf (3"-4" wide) around my little dining corner, full length of the walls.

I then want to paint the bottom half of the wall after installation. A dining table with six chairs sits in this corner.

A carpenter friend of mine keeps providing suggestions/conflicts but hasn't had the time to really finish a solution. My attempts of Googling for examples has given nothing helpful. The job is apparently too small for a few places to care about so I feel a little stuck.

Issues friend brought up: #1. You should add moulding to make it a statement piece. -I am ok with making things fancy and now I feel inspired for more than a floating shelf- #2.A shelf 4' up against the corner to the hallway is perfect height/location to run into (highlighted spot in my image) -not an active concern since I don't really walk there but it's behind my dining chairs so understand where he is coming from. But what's the solution?-. 2a. Curve/slant the end of the shelf -but he doesn't know how to make the moulding work and keeps not finding some catalogue for options. Is there an answer with moulding?- 2b. Start the shelf a few inches in from the corner -but how would I delineate the line for painting the bottom half of the wall cleanly?

I'll take any opinion, thoughts on how to move forward, moulding suggestion. The answer could just be floating shelves, my friend just awkwardly inspired me and it's hard backtrack that idea. I've already downgraded a wainscoting design due to thin baseboards so this project already hurts.
