An object moves in a straight line starting from a reference point.

• It moves forward 60 m in 15 s

• It moves backward 20 m in 5 s

• It moves forward 30 m in 10 s

• It then remains at rest for 10 s

Questions:

  1. What is the total distance traveled?

  2. What is the total displacement?

  3. Calculate:

the average speed

the average velocity

  1. Compare the speeds during each phase of motion

I am stuck on question 3. Should we include the 10 seconds when the object is at rest in the total time when calculating the average speed and average velocity, or not? Why?
