I thought the Mid Sodor Railway wasn't real. I grew up with seasons 1 - 5 on video as a kid and since the first episodes of season 4 with stories about the MSR were all depicted as flashbacks and Thomas telling the other engines these stories, I thought they were just stories he was telling them and not 'real things that happened'. I was also like 4-6 years old at the time and didn't realize that Peter Sam and Sir Handel (and also Duke) on the Skarloey Railway were Stuart and Falcon from the MSR lmao.

Also from an out-of-universe perspective, I thought the flashback in Thomas' Christmas Party to Mrs. Kyndley's Christmas was a flashback to a real episode I just didn't have on video and also that the series was filmed on life-size sets with real-size engines and stuff.
