Hi everyone,

I’m currently working as a QA Engineer with ~4 years of experience at a startup, and my role has gone beyond just testing.

Because it’s a startup, I’ve been quite involved in the product side as well — understanding requirements, discussing features with devs, identifying gaps in user flows, and suggesting improvements before releases. Along with that, I’ve worked on manual testing, automation, API testing, and release cycles.

Over time, I’ve realized that I genuinely enjoy thinking about product decisions, user experience, and the “why” behind features much more than pure QA work.

So I’m now seriously considering transitioning into a Product Management role.

I’d really appreciate honest advice from people here:

  1. Is QA → PM a realistic transition in today’s market?

  2. Given my startup exposure, should I push for an internal switch or directly apply for APM/PM roles?

  3. What exact steps should I follow to make this transition (in order)?

  4. What skills should I prioritize first — product thinking, metrics, SQL, PRDs, etc.?

  5. Would it be smarter to target Product Analyst/Business Analyst roles first?

Also, I’d love recommendations on:

- Best resources (courses, YouTube channels, blogs, books)

- Any specific roadmap that actually worked for you

- Things you wish you knew before switching to PM

A bit more context:

- Based in India

- Strong exposure to Agile and cross-functional teams

- Informally involved in product discussions, but no official PM experience yet

I’m ready to put in the effort (case studies, learning, etc.), but I want to make sure I’m following the right approach instead of randomly trying things.

Would really appreciate guidance from anyone who has made a similar transition or is currently in product.

Thanks in advance!
